Longfellow Days Celebration
, Brunswick, Maine

A Brunswick community celebration of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow!

Here and abroad, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is best known as a poet. However, he was also a linguist, an early teacher of modern languages and a distinguished translator from Spanish, French, Italian and the languages of German, Nordic and Icelandic cultures. Longfellow’s distinctly American verse was influenced by foreign travel and cross-cultural immersion. As he introduced the world to our country’s legends and traditions, so also he exposed Americans to the literary heritage of Europe.

Inspired by the poet's travels, fluency in many languages, abiding interest in European literatures, and special role as Ambassador of good will from and to America, we have chosen an international theme for this year's - our fifth - annual program. We will have an award winning National Geographic photographer and an Everest expeditioner as speakers, launch a permanent community exhibit of writings and images from abroad -bring yours!- at Frontier, offer a reader's theater performance with a stellar local cast at the Theater Project, and so much more.

You're Invited!

Join us for an eclectic mix of family entertaiment and educational experiences. Enjoy top-flight lectures, poetry-readings, concerts, exhibits and tours. The public is invited - bring the kids! This is a unique opportunity to enjoy a community-wide mix of entertainment, history and cultural enrichment. Most activities are free, some charge. See details of events below.
